A Tribute to Marilyn Monroe

August 13, 2012 § Leave a comment

Marilyn Monroe was born in Los Angeles as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926. The American sex symbol and icon is still celebrated today. Last Monday, the 5th of August was the 50th anniversary of her death. The Actress, model, and singer held many ties in our city of San Francisco.
Thalia Jewelry is proud to acknowledge that the owner of one of our stores Blanc Boutique’s, Nancy Mayer, was closely related to a friend and coworker of Marilyn’s. When Marilyn was starting out as an actress for Twentieth Century Fox she worked directly with Nancy’s uncle, Milton Krasner, who was head cinematographer at the studio. She later requested him to make many of her movies through Marilyn Monroe Productions. But that’s not all that drew Marilyn to San Francisco; In January of 1954 Marilyn eloped with baseball player Joe DiMaggio at The San Francisco City Hall. This was Marilyn’s second marriage, and though short lived the couple was known to have a passionate relationship. The marriage ended just nine months after it became official but DiMaggio did not throw in the towel just yet. He proposed a second time in 1962 but was unsuccessful in his attempts. After her death later that year DiMaggio claimed her body and for 20 years delivered half-dozen roses to her crypt three times a week.
We love hearing stories about the beautiful Marilyn Monroe, if you know any more about our favorite icons presence in our city by the bay please share!
